Benzoyl Peroxide As an Acne Treatment
Benzoyl Peroxide is an ingredient found in many over the counter acne treatment products. It can be especially helpful in treating mild acne. It is safe to use on all ages and it can be used with other OTC treatments.
How does Benzoyl Peroxide work?
Benzoyl peroxide works by destroying the bacteria responsible for causing acne. It acts as an oxidizing agent and an antiseptic. It reduces the amount blocked pores. Give it at least 2 weeks to see any improvement.
Where do you buy it?
Benzoyl peroxide is obtainable in many forms: gels, cleansers, lotions, and creams, in non-prescription concentrations from 2.5% up to 10%. It is also offered in prescription form such as Benzamycin® or Duac(TM).

What are the most common side effects?
The most common side effect is dryness. You can apply a light moisturizer that’s oil free. If you experience more severe dryness, give your skin some time to heal and then try a lower concentration.
If you experience mild irritation, try using it less frequency. If irritation is severe or discontinue use and once irritation subsides, you can try again if you like.
Contact dermatitis can be caused by allergy or irritation. Discontinue use immediately and treat with a mild topical steroid. Hydrocortisone cream is readily available at any drug store and works well.
There are many products on the market that contain Benzoyl Peroxide from as little as 2.5% to as much as 10%. It’s always best to start with, the lowest possible amount and then if that doesn’t work try one that’s slightly stronger. Don’t overuse as it is drying and will cause flaking.
